General information

The small, traditional, pretty houses are smoothly surrounded by hills with magnificent views, clear waters, rich vegetation and peaceful fields. Theogefiro: a miracle of nature. The unexplored caves located close to river Kalamas present a challenge for those who love adventure. The vineyards, the debina vine, the local assortment of grapes and the wines are what the area is most well-known for. This old activity is what made the area rich and famous, from the late medieval period to the end of the 19th century. But even today, the wine still opens the road to development; three wineries operate in Zitsa and there are quite a few wine producers in Protopappa and the surrounding villages. Thanks to the vinicultural activities, the population of the area doubles every year during the summer period. The road that leads to the monasteries goes through this village. Some of the monasteries, which are now listed monuments, used to be house wine production operations, where the abbot was often the wine-maker.
