The Aherontas pass is situated at high altitude with predominantly limestone rocks. On the rocks develops scrub vegetation and mainly Quercus coccifera, Phylirea media etc. The chasmophytic vegetation of ravines that is constituted of many interesting species colonises the steep limestone rocks (water flows out of the base of the rocks at some places) of the ravine which lends the region a great environmental significance. Several kinds of birds protected by the Treaty of Bern and the Directive 79/409 of the EEC.
