KAMBOHORIA OF IOANNINA/NATURAL BEAUTIES
One of the most important caves of the world is at a distance of just four kilometres from the centre of the city of Ioannina, on the road to Metsovo.
The existence of the cave has been known since early in the last century, in 1940 it was used as a refuge by locals from the bombardment of the Italians.
In 1945, the Anna and Ioannis Petrohilos married couple undertook to explore the cave. According to I. Pertohilos, the cave is part of an underground river aged 1,500,000 years. Moreover, the bones of a bear that lived here 600,000 years ago were found there.
The length of the trip is 1,100 m. Some 19 kinds of stalagmites and stalactites and a rich spectrum of colours greet visitors who survey the catacombes, the palace of Persephone, with awe and are scared to death by the giant Medousa and calmed at the petrified lake with water lilies, ending up, shortly before the exit, in the colourful chamber of the Altar. A trip in a fairy tale land.
The temperature of the air is 18oC and the water of the lakes is 14o C. It has a total area of 14,800 squared metres.
