THE TZOUMERKA REGION/MUSEUMS
- Matsoukio Museum:
Following the initiative of the monastery committee of Vyliza the Matsouki Museum has been founded with the portable icons and relics of the Vyliza monastery and the John the Baptist Chapel.
It is housed in the Elementary School and is open to visitors. The icons have been preserved by the 8th Supervisory Committee of Byzantine monuments and are especially interesting from an artistic and historical perspective. The two despotic icons of Christ on the Throne and the Virgin Bearing the Child on the throne, works of the Cretan painter Georgios Nomikos (1705) stand apart among the collection. The icon of Christ on the throne holding the globe with a riverside landscape, inspired by Western prototypes, a work of exceptional beauty which is very rare, is from the 17th century. Icons of the 18th and 19th centuries mark the links of the region with the Ionian islands. The miracle-working icon of the Virgin of Vyliza is kept here. Its metal cover was made by the famous artisan from Kalarrytes Athanasios Tsomouris. Old manuscripts, books and a lectern decorated with ivory complete this special collection.
