THE METSOVO AREA/NATURAL BEAUTIES

As the nucleaus of the Pindos National Park, it has been listed as one of the world's most sensitive areas since 1987 by the International League for Protection
of Nature. It is crossed by Arkoudorema which flows into the Aoos River at Smixomata. 29 species of mammals have been recorded, including bears, deer, wolves and otters, 28 species of reptiles and 122 species of birds. Trout swim in the crystal clear waters. Supercentenarian trees aged over 700 years, rare wild flowers, 400 types of mushrooms which can only be admired from afar since the rules are strict: As we leave here we take with us only our impressions and leave behind only our footprints. Abandoned water saws and remains of cut trees are reminiscent of the woodcutting activity that took place here, before the area was listed as a national park. Entrance into the park is allowed only through its three natural entrances: Stavros to the north, Salatoura Papagianni to the east and Salatoura Milias to the southeast. The best time to visit is from May to October.

- Fleggas Lakes:
The alpine Fleggas lakes cast a true spell on climbers, who are rarely able to approach them, even in summer. The Mnimata flume’s sources. located at an altitude of 1950 meters, form the first lake from which water falls from a height of 20 meters into the second.

- Artificial lake of the Aoos River:
A fine example of the harmonious co-existence of modern technology and the environment, the artificial lake created from the sources of the Aoos River, is located in a unique locations full of oak, fir and pine trees, above Metsovo in the Poltsies mountain range. The view from here is unforgettable during all seasons of the year.
