KONITSA REGION/SETTLEMENTS
- Konitsa:
From the slopes of Trapezitsa, like a large amphitheatre, Konitsa, the centre of the ancient state of Molossi and a beloved residential area for wealthy Ottomans during the Turkish occupation, faces its fertile valley where the rivers Voidomatis and Sarantaporos join the imposing Aoos. The little church of St. George of Ioannina with 120 frescoes created by painters from the village Hionadites, the listed Byzantine monuments (Metropolitan Church, St. Apostoloi, Kokkini Panaghia and St. Nikolaos, 2 km north of the settlement),the mosque of sultan Suleiman the Great, an Islamic monument dating back to 1536, the mansion of Hussein Bey, the koulia (tower) and the ruins of the mansion where Hamko, the mother of Ali Pasha was born, were made by the craftsmen who raised awareness of the area around the world. Upon the initiative of the teacher and sculptor Christos Lambrou and with the aid of the municipal authority at the time, some other craftsmen created here in 1995 a small "panorama" of Greek modern sculpture.
- Mastrohoria:
The villages of craftsmen are spread along Sarantaporos and climb up the hills of Grammos: Pirsogianni, Kastanea, Vourmpiani, Drossopighi, with its famous stone craftsmen, Gorgopotamos with its sculptors, Hioniades with their hagiographers and painters.
