The guilds

The guilds or the associations developed in the area of present day Greece mainly during the Turkish occupation. From the 16th century onwards the wood sculpture art also developed specifically in the Epirus area.

From the cutting of the suitable timber, its transportation, its time consuming and laborious preparation and processing, as well as their journeys and the compulsory migration, we can imagine how difficult their life must have been.

On many occasions certain «myths» also developed around the life of the renowned master taliadoroi. These are mainly concerned with their passion for the work, their excellent knowledge, their talent and their artistry.

Usually the master craftsman, who was the eldest, drew and guarded the designs, applied the «finishing touches» to the work and negotiated the agreements for the assumption of the job.
